How to Get Your Garden Ready For Autumn

Prepare for Autumn

Do you have a plan for your garden’s transition into the Autumn months?

As summer starts to come to an end, it’s time to get your garden ready for the cool days of autumn.

This guide has some great tips and tools to make the process easy and enjoyable!

Tidy Garden

1. Tidy Up Your Garden

Start by giving your garden a good clean-up. Remove any dead plants, weeds, and fallen leaves. This not only keeps your garden looking neat but also prevents those pesky pests and diseases from moving in.

Top Tip

Remember to tidy your shed and greenhouse too, giving the glass a good clean. And while you’re at it, remember to put away your garden furniture for the season.

2. Prune and Trim

Autumn is an ideal time for pruning shrubs, trees, and perennials. Pruning encourages healthy growth and prepares plants for the colder months ahead.

Top Tip

Focus on removing dead or diseased branches and consider shaping your plants to improve air circulation and sunlight exposure.

3. Get Planting

Many vegetables and flowers thrive in cooler temperatures. Consider planting autumn vegetables like carrots, spinach, and kale, as well as flowers like chrysanthemums and pansies.

This is also the perfect time to plant new borders or give the old ones a makeover for a pop of colour.

Top Tip

Use soil testers to ensure your soil has the right pH and nutrient levels for new plants.

4. Mulch and Protect

Mulching is a key step in preparing your garden for autumn. It helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect plant roots from the cold.

Mulch

Top Tip

Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around your plants, ensuring they have a cosy blanket for the winter months.

Types of organic mulch you can use:

    • Horse manure.
    • Homemade compost.
    • Leaf mould.
    • Composted wood-chips.

5. Water Wisely

While the cooler weather means less frequent watering, it’s still important to keep an eye on your garden’s moisture levels. Autumn winds can dry out soil quicker than you might expect.

Top Tip

Water your garden in the morning to prevent excess moisture at night, which can lead to fungal growth.

However, if your plants are suffering from fungus, baking soda or apple cider vinegar are great organic solutions for treatment, and most importantly, they don’t harm the plant.

6. Prepare Your Lawn

Autumn is the perfect time to give your lawn some extra love and attention. Aerate the soil to improve drainage, something our new Eco Fork can assist with. Then, apply a fall fertiliser to promote strong root growth.

Top Tip

Rake up fallen leaves regularly to prevent them from smothering your lawn and creating bare patches.

Vulnerable Plants

7. Protect Vulnerable Plants

As the temperatures drop, some plants may need a little extra TLC. You can help them out by using cloches or plant blankets to keep them cosy and shield them from frost.

Top Tip

Group potted plants together and move them to sheltered areas. Don’t forget, you can also bring vulnerable plants indoors for extra warmth and protection.

8. Maintain Your Garden Tools

Don’t forget to give your garden tools a little love before storing them away for winter. Giving them a good clean and checking for any damage will help keep them in great shape.

Top Tip

Remember to sharpen blades and oil any moving parts to prevent rust. Your tools will thank you!

Here are a few more tasks you can do to get ready for Autumn:

  • Show some attention to your ponds by keeping the water leaf-free with a net or covering them up.
  • Help your climbers by tying them in and staking young trees for support.
  • Keep your hoses and spray guns safe by emptying them and storing them somewhere dry.
  • Don’t forget to disconnect your hose and shut off your outdoor tap – you don’t want it to freeze and be damaged by the expanding ice.

Getting your garden ready for autumn can be quite enjoyable! With the right tools and a little bit of planning, you can ensure your garden remains beautiful and healthy throughout the season.

Enjoy your Autumn preparations!
